Page-proofs for page 5 of Un coup de dés

ucdd page proofs

Mallarmé here directs the printer to maintain a strict alignment between the units on the verso and recto sides of the page. The units may exert a variable pull, but such permutable variability arises only out of typographic calculation.

These page-proofs were the corrected proofs that Mallarmé had made for the aborted Didot/Vollard edition. This manuscript provides the strongest authorial witness to the porm; indeed many critics claim that the poem was written at this draft-stage, because it is here where the alignments are established. The 1914 Gallimard edition closely follows from this manuscript, but there are some discrepancies, and it is only the 1980 Ronat edition which most closely respects the layout suggested on this draft-stage.

This manuscript is reproduced in R.G. Cohn, Mallarmé's Masterwork: New Findings, The Hague: Mouton, 1966. 89-111; see 78-80 for a brief commentary.
