Blanchot proposes an affinity between Bouvard and P´cuchet's failures and Flaubert's attempts at prose: the question for Flaubert is "comment la nullité fait oeuvre et comment peuvent coïncider, au niveau de la littérature, la totalité du savoir encyclopédique (donc, le maximum de substance) et le rien sans lequel Flaubert soupçonne qu'il n'y a pas d'affirmation littéraire" (Blanchot 1969, 490). Flaubert's project thus runs the same risk as that of Bouvard and Pécuchet, of literalizing Mallarme's claim that "tout, au monde, existe pour aboutir à un livre" (OC: 378). But then, in the Dictionnaire des idées reçus, they define a livre with "Quel qu'il soit, toujours trop long"; and literature is, obviously, an "Occupation des oisifs" (Flaubert, 366).
