David Hayman has written that shortly after completing his dissertation on Mallarmé's influence on Joyce, he asked Beckett to offer his opinion on the matter. Beckett disagreed with Hayman's premise and stated "I think [Joyce] took a lot from Dante" (David Hayman, "Beckett," unpublished).
