The conflation of war and scatology pervades the accounting of the museyroom's exhibits. Joyce remarked the unfortunate overdetermination of the name of the battle site in the notebook while accumulating notes for this passage with the entry "loowater carnage" (VI.B. 15: 73). There is some historical irony to this pun since the wet ground at Waterloo played a crucial rôle in determining Wellington's victory over Napoleon.
