Most of the additions dating from this period are made on the basis
of entries in the last part of notebook B.4, starting on page 228, i.e.
after the excerpts from Dora Marsden's book The Definition of the Godhead
(Dora Marsden, The Definition of the Godhead (London: The Egoist
Press, 1928)), which Joyce received on 31.12.1928, indicating that the
first natural selection of insects was not made before 1929. Cf. unpublished
postcard Joyce wrote (from Paris) to Harriet Weaver (HSW 184): "I received
Miss Marsden's book. Many thanks." Notes on insects in B.04 are to be found
only on subsequent pages. Inge Landuyt discovered that the entry "want
to join the / police" (B.4, 189(a)) refers to a postcard written on the
18th of April 1929, where Joyce writes that he "would prefer [to Wyndham
Lewis' Enemy] the book advertised in Pearson's W[eekly] 'Want
to join the police?".)
