Joyce added the "space" to the "time being" in July
or August 1927 (JJA 46 p. 430), i.e. before he read Wyndham Lewis'
attack in Time and Western Man in September '27, but after he read
the earlier attack in The Art of Being Ruled (cf. Ellmann, 595,
n. 67 in reference to an unpublished letter to Harriet Weaver, March 23,
1926).
